Mama and Her Piglets
Sandy Creek Lane sow farm opened in 2017. Sows are mama pigs, and this farm is where they are bred and the piglets are born. They stay at this farm for a few weeks until they are moved to a farm specializing in raising pigs for market. The farm is located in central Illinois. Depending on the point at which the sows are at in their pregnancy, they may be in open pens or individual pens. In either situation, they are monitored with RFID tags and are checked by workers and veterinarians regularly. They often use coloring to mark on the pigs noting due dates or if specific treatment was given. Once giving birth, mama stays with her piglets in a pen designed to keep them all safe, warm and well fed.
